Jazz studies is an integral part of the Southmoore Instrumental Arts Program. Our jazz bands are dedicated to performing the finest of jazz literature from past standards to contemporary works. The bands also regularly perform music outside of the jazz idiom. The groups have an active performance schedule from playing at various school functions and community events, to formal concerts and contests.
Due to high enrollment numbers the Southmoore Jazz Program offers three class hours in the regular academic schedule. The thirs hour jazz band is open to all Southmoore Band students and serves as our foundation group where students are introduced to jazz style and performance. The fifth and sixth hour jazz bands functions as select groups with students admitted only by audition. These ensembles will be an advanced level group allowing our students to experience more challenging literature.
Students must be enrolled in first or second hour band in order to enroll in jazz band. Exceptions made be made by Mr. Clifton for students playing speciality instruments such as guitar and piano.
